Established in 1938 and has played concerts regularly for over 70 years. During this time the orchestra has had only seven regular conductors. The 80-member ensemble is currently under the direction of Maestro David Itkin. Membership is drawn from the finest musicians attending the College of Music.
The UNT Orchestral Studies program involves over 175 undergraduate and graduate students and offers performance opportunities for majors and non-majors. With approximately 80% of its members receiving a scholarship, the UNT Symphony Orchestra and UNT Concert Orchestra consist of students from 26 states and 18 countries. Ensemble placement is by audition only.
The expansive Margot and Bill Winspear Performance Hall has been recognized as one of the finest concert halls in the world. The UNT College of Music began live streaming ensemble performances in 2009 for parents, potential students, and distant colleagues while showing the world-renowned music programs at UNT.
